The first time you shop for a high-end perfume, you may feel like you're stepping into a mysterious world. The terminology can be a bit confusing, and some of the scents might be so similar that you're not sure which one to select. Here are a few tips to guide you as you purchase your first women's perfume.
Smell lots of scents to figure out what you generally like.
Before you actually buy a perfume, make sure you visit several different counters and scent shops. Smell whatever you come across, and keep notes. While you can write down which exact perfumes you like, what you're actually trying to do here is narrow down which type of scents you like best. Perfumes are usually either floral, woodsy, fruity, or citrusy. As you smell various perfumes and write down your feelings about them, you should start to hone in on one type you prefer over the others. This allows you to better focus your shopping effort. For instance, once you realize you prefer woodsy scents, you can then keep sampling only woodsy scents until you find one you really enjoy.
Sample the perfumes on your own skin.
Once you determine which type of perfume you like, make sure you try the top contenders on your own skin. Perfumes smell a little different on everyone. There may be some perfumes you like in the bottle but not on your own skin. Of course, you have limited skin space, so only try a perfume on your skin if you're already pretty confident you'll enjoy it.
Buy a small bottle.
When you do find a perfume you want to buy, start with a small bottle. It can be tempting to buy a larger bottle since it tends to be a better price per volume, but some of the bottle may go to waste if you change your mind about the scent in the coming months. If you start with a small bottle, you can use it up, make sure you like it, and then invest in a big bottle next time.
Buying high-end perfume for the first time can be a lot of fun, as long as you remember to relax and enjoy yourself. Take your time sampling, taking notes, and looking for deals on small bottles.
